Australia’s leading deep tech incubator, Cicada Innovations, wants to establish Australia as an innovation nation – and itself as a thought leader in the deep tech space.

Australia’s leading deep tech incubator believes this ground-breaking technology has the potential to have a massive global impact, with the startups and scaleups it backs already working to solve the world’s most pressing problems, from world hunger to climate change.

In 2023, the incubator kicked off its thought leadership campaign, Cicada x Tech23, with a “festival of ideas” that showcased 23 of Australia’s most innovative deep tech ventures, bringing together visionary founders, investors, and industry leaders to form meaningful connections, spark conversations, and kickstart fruitful collaborations.

Cicada Innovations asked us to craft compelling messaging for the event and marketing collateral, including a thought leadership report that combined the stories of Cicada x Tech23’s founders with data from the incubator’s two-decade tenure in the deep tech space.

We took a complex subject and explained it in a way that everybody could understand, encouraging governments, investors, universities, and industry alike to reimagine their role in supporting the next wave of innovators.

Giving voice to big ideas and future-thinking

We rose to the challenge, with a report that took the insights gleaned from the event and the incubator’s own data to paint a picture of the deep tech landscape in Australia.

The report profiled deep tech founders from across the country, delving into the complicated journey from start-up to scale-up, assessing the potential impact Australia’s deep tech ventures could have on the world, and outlining what the country needs to do to make that a reality.

We took a complex, technical subject and explained it in a way that everybody could understand, encouraging governments, investors, universities, and industry alike to reimagine their role in supporting the next wave of innovators.

The result was a thought leadership campaign that drove awareness of both Cicada Innovations itself, and deep tech. Insights from the report were reported on by The Australian Financial Review, The Australian, Startup Daily,  and Business News Australia, and it was downloaded by high-profile members of the incubator’s target audience.

Ultimately, the Cicada x Tech23 campaign successfully solidified the incubator’s reputation as a visionary in deep tech, while advocating for its cause in Australia—its success laying the groundwork for an ongoing collaboration between Cicada Innovations and Wonderthink that gives voice to big ideas.
